| Guillaume Le Conquérant Cup Le Havre-Cowes |
|
It was in a strengthening Force 2 - 3 westerly, that five boats took up the challenge of the Guillaume le Conquérant Cup, Bank Holiday weekend, when they raced back to Cowes from Le Havre, following their race there from Cowes the previous day, in the RORC Cervantes Trophy race. Overall winner in that race was the Irish boat, Chieftain (Ger O'Rourke). Chieftain was very keen to complete the return match, with Minnie-the Moocher (Anthony Richards) also on the start-line and equally keen, to retain the cup, which she had won in 2004. There was a lot of spectator interest at the start on the Sunday evening, with the International Snipe dinghy fleet taking part in the Francoise de Grace Cup that weekend, providing a spectacular backdrop. It was a good race, despite a slow start, with the wind strengthening as the boats neared the Island and some of them being able to fly their kites. The wind increased and it was reported as being lively as rain later came through. First into the Solent, at 02:07, was Chieftain, followed by Alice 2 (Simon Henning) and Water Venture (John Liddell). Chieftain crossed the Island Sailing Club's line in driving rain to take the cup at 02:57, with Alice 2 second and Water Venture third. A very close finish left La Bayadere (Albrecht Muller von Blumencron) fourth, just 6 minutes ahead of Minnie-the-Moocher, fifth, on corrected time. -- Mike Edwards Société des Régates du Havre Yacht Club Ranking: 1.
