Two Handed Figaro 2 GROUPE PARTOUCHE takes 4th place overall in the Myth of Malham. Saturday 27th May 2006 saw a fleet of 45 yachts gather on the RYS line for the start of the RORC Myth of Malham race. The morning dawned overcast with a light south-westerly breeze. With a forecast of the wind building the Race Committee sent the fleet on the longer course. This took them out through the Eastern Solent around the Owers to Rustington Outfall buoy off Littlehampton and then onto Dieppe. Most yachts chose to fly spinnakers at the start but it was a shy reach and those under white sails were not obviously disadvantaged. On the first start (IRC2 & 3 at 0800) Ilex of Upnor had a good start along with Rainmaker and Mavis III of Gosport. At 0810 IRCSZ, Z & 1 got off on time with a large group of boats starting well. The breeze built during the day and the fleet enjoyed fast reaching mostly under two sails. The RORC finishing team aboard “Arbalestrille” the committee boat were able to finish the first few boats but when the wind built to 30 knots they were forced to leave station. Solune, JP Chomette’s Nacira 60 was the first boat to cross the line at Dieppe at 15 38 30 with an elapsed time of 7 48 30 and achieved a remarkable average speed of 14.74knts. Chieftain, Ger O Rourke’s canting keel Cookson 50 was the second boat home at 16 36 18 which was quick enough to win Super Zero and the Myth of Malham Trophy; the overall prize in IRC. The most impressive performance was Christophe Coatnoan’s Figaro II Groupe Partouche. They had a great race winning not only the 2 Handed division but also IRC 1 and were 4th Overall. Minnie the Moocher Anthony Richards Ker 11.3 also had a great race surfing faster than many of the bigger heavier boats. She won IRM and IRC class Zero. The RORC is grateful to the Cercle de la Voile de Dieppe for their fantastic hospitality and in particular to Jacques-Henri Heulot and Hervé Barret the President of the club. RORC Medallions will be presented on Tuesday 20th of June at 19:30 at the RORC Club house; all crews are welcome.
