| Tonnerre wins the Conway Media Round Ireland Race |
|
Tonnerre de Breskens 3 led the team, winning line honours, first overall and first in class for IRC Zero. Visit Malta Puma topped IRC One and was awarded third overall, and Psipsina narrowly missed out on first in IRC 2, but won the Two - Handed Division. Tonnerre was off to a flying start on a beautiful Sunday morning in Wicklow, racing away under her new Code Zero to an early lead and never looking back. She never relinquished her lead in the race, finishing in the early hours of Thursday nearly four hours ahead of the theoretically faster Open 60 Toe in the Water, sailing as Spirit of Rosslare Europort. Light breeze and foul tides proved to be the constant nemesis of the smaller boats during the race with many stranded for days off the north coast of Ireland. Visit Malta Puma watched their lead narrow, then disappear, as they crept along past Belfast with the rest of the IRC One fleet gaining ground. She swapped the lead with Fujitsu, Angelina and Tsunami before arriving back in Wicklow on June 25, just a day after her teammate Tonnerre. Psipsina and Raging Bull battled for the lead throughout the race, only separating in the light airs between Belfast and Rockabill. Psipsina's consolation was first in the Two-Handed Division, with a comfortable win over Noonan Boats Oystercatcher.
