RORC team compete in New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup

Royal Ocean Racing Club Team on The Cat Came Back. Photo: Dan Nerney, NYYCThe New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup, Held in Newport R.I., USA from 16-19 Sept was an event to remember.

The race management and hospitality was reminiscent of the days when teams from the USA ruled supreme in the Americas Cup; a flawless show of national pride, blended with respect for the 19 Clubs, from 14 nations which congregated at the NYYC’s splendid clubhouse, Harbour Court.

The British tendered three teams, from the Royal Yacht Squadron, Royal Thames Yacht Club and RORC, all of whom embraced the Corinthian spirit of the event by selecting young and slightly older amateur sailors and the odd legend.

RORC were represented by a total of two commodores, two past flag officers and two main committee members, along with sailing legend and Chief Executive, Eddie Warden Owen and other experienced offshore sailors. We counted a total of 10 helmsmen, from a crew of 12 and knew our boat handling would need to improve rapidly if we were to get the notoriously ‘twitchy’ Swan 42s around a crowded race course. The other issue was that our average age probably doubled that of some of the other national teams….. Yikes!!

End of an epic

Volvo Open 70 Groupama smashed the Round Britain and Ireland Race Record. Photo: RORC/Rick TomlinsonThe Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race proved to be one of the most thrilling record-breaking races in years. There was drama, even before the start of this challenging race.

A potentially boat breaking low depression was predicted to hit the west coast of Ireland at precisely the moment when the majority of the fleet would be there and caught out with nowhere to run. To avoid the extreme weather the Royal Ocean Racing Club took the decision to reverse the course and race anti-clockwise around Britain and Ireland. The race is 1802 miles long and highly tactical with frequent changes to the weather and sea state. Racing around Britain and Ireland is a real challenge. At one time or another all of the competing yachts experienced some testing conditions and it would be over two weeks before some of the competitors would complete the course.

The Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race exploded into action on the 23rd August, under grey leaden skies and big breeze.

ICAP Leopard and Telefónica Azul were a hair-raising sight as RORC Chief Executive Eddie Warden Owen reported from the racecourse:

"It was a magnificent start, 25 knots from the southwest with gusts of up to 30 knots coming out of the Medina River. Telefónica was an impressive sight, built to race at full tilt around the world, she carried her enormous spinnaker to blast past Leopard at over 25 knots. It was a really impressive sight to see these huge machines charging down the Solent leaving the rest of the 27-strong fleet in their wake."

Banque Populaire V Jules Verne Trophy Record Attempt

B. Stichelbaut/BPCEThis year RORC member Brian Thompson will attempt to break the Round the World Fully Crewed Record as helmsman on Banque Populaire V, the world's largest and fastest racing trimaran. The target is to beat 48 days and average over 25 knots for the 28,000 mile course. In the process Brian will have sailed 4 non stop circumnavigations of the globe, more than anyone ever in UK.

It was at 5:03pm on Monday 21st November that Loïck Peyron and his men, including Brian, left the dock, three weeks after their arrival in Brest in preparation for this monumentous challenge. As they left Brest the wind was very light, and the team waited for the wind to build and finally at 08h31mins42s Banque Populaire V crossed the startline doing 25 knots quickly building to 35 knots.

You can follow Banque Populaire and Brian's progress by visiting the offical Banque Populaire website or follow Brian's blog.

ARC Start - Sunday 20 November 2011

Some of the yachts at the start of the ARC 2011. Photo: World CruisingSunday was a sparkling day off Las Palmas de Gran Canaria; perfect conditions for the start of the 26th Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC). The wind was NNE 15 knots and a steep swell was coming around the north end of the island. The course is simple: Leave Gran Canaria to starboard and Pigeon Island off Saint Lucia to port, to Rodney Bay, a distance of 2700 miles.

Three of the boats sailing under IRC started at 1230 in the open division as they are too big for the racing divisions. The veteran Whitbread Rothmans, now under the Swedish flag, led the way, with the trimaran Rayon Vert (FRA) crossing ahead of the other two, Med Sprit (ex Bols) and J-P Chomette's Oceans Seven2, the biggest boat in the event.

Fifteen minutes later saw the start of the IRC racing divisions which are run under the auspices of the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC). The fleet of 23 was lead across the line by the Swan 56 Clem (ESP) closely followed by the Akilaria 40 Vaquita (AUT). The IMX-45 Maline (NOR) and the extensively campaigned and familiar Scarlet Oyster (GBR) just nosing in front of the next five yachts, all flying spinnakers, that crossed the line together.

The ARC crossing record is 11 days, 5 hours, 32 minutes and 30 seconds, set by Italian maxi yacht Capricorno (Rinaldo Del Bono), in 2006. Two boats with very different concepts, Med Spirit and Rayon Vert are both known to have an eye on beating it should the favourable conditions hold for the whole of the crossing.

The ARC fleet of 217 are all fitted with Yellowbrick trackers and many, including yachts that are racing, are submitting daily logs. Their progress may be followed on the tracking page.
