De Guingand Bowl Cowes – St Vaast French IMX 40 “Cajou” pips “Exabyte 2” for the Trophy The second RORC offshore race of the season took the fleet direct to St Vaast. Beautiful summer weather had certainly not arrived. As Mark Jephcott owner of Spirit of Defiance put it “on the way to the start it was very wet and cold and we nearly decided to stop at the Folly”. However about an hour before the start the sun came out the viz cleared, wind moderated and Spirit of Defiance went on to win the David Maufe Salver for IRC3. The Folly might have cost Mark in beer now it will cost him in champagne! The overall battle was to be between two IMX40s with the French coming out on top. Pierre Balyau’s “Cajou” took the overall trophy from Shaun Frohilich’ “Exabyte 2” by 18 seconds on corrected time. Delighted to receive the De Guingand Bowl the crew said they had only seen Exabyte at the start and then again on the finishing line! Cajou also won the Stewart Cup for BCT in IRC 1. It was a fast non spinnaker reach out of the Solent but not without some problems for a few at the start. Piet Vroon’s “Tonnerre” went aground just off the RYS losing 16 inches of rudder. Piet commented at the end of the race that by the time he had got Tonnerre home to Breskens he would have sailed 600 miles to get to the start and then home, all for an 83 mile race. Such is Piet’s dedication to RORC racing. The Race Committee at the start observed three boats going the wrong side of Snowden, one OCS who did not come back, one starting in the wrong class and four boats obviously late at the start and after turning their engines off not exonerating themselves with turns. We will take action where necessary but please, please read the rules. Race Officers do not like having protest competitors and/or issue penalities. Talking of rules – remember in RORC races a harness and lifejacket shall be worn a. between the hours of sunset and sunrise b. when alone on deck c. when reefed d. when the true wind speed is 25 knots or above e. when the visibility is less than one nautical mile see Special Regulations 5.01.3 and 5.02.5 Comments from the fleet in St Vaast were mostly that despite the race being on the nose all the way they had had a “lovely race”. A full moon gave a bright dry night. As usual there was a great deal of shipping in the Channel but on this occasion we had reports of large container ships using their flood lights to pick out the yachts and even some who had VHF communication. At 0621 the Volvo 60 “Venom”, Windward Sailing, crossed the finishing line. The committee boat on the line was “Bien Aller” (Sun Odyessy 40) and kindly provided by the owner Philippe Paulmier. The RORC team were joined by the President of the St Vaast Yacht Club, Philippe Sola together with Rene Ravase and Natham Giovanii. It is the co-operation between the Clubs which makes these races possible and the RORC is extremely grateful for the assistance received from the Yacht Club de St Vaast. The Farr 52 “Bear of Britain” Kit Hobday/Tim Louis was second over the line at 0650 which was good enough to give her lst IRC Super Zero. Continuing their training for the forthcoming Admiral’s Cup, Bear turned round on the line and headed home. A delighted David Lewis received the Auclair Memorial Trophy for winning IRC 2 with “Dansos”. A Comfortina 38 she is owned by David Lewis and Bob McPherson (Bob of the results program fame!). On corrected time Dansos was nearly four minutes ahead of Michael Ronson’s HOD35 “Carpetbagger” . David thought that going west had contributed to their success. Some of the fleet either found their draft was too deep to get into St Vaast or time constraints meant crossing the line and going straight home. John Shepherd’s Kerr 11.3 had to go straight home but I am sure John will be delighted to receive the St Barbara Trophy for BCT IRC 0 and the Windward Sailing Trophy for BCT IRM. Best corrected time in the Multihull class was “Tancrede” a Normanni design owned by MCF Gerant Michel Fortin with Duncan Barr’s “Shockwave” 2nd and Richard Roscoe’s “Triohe” 3rd. Mike Butterfield’s “Dazzle” reported gear failure and retired at the Nab. RORC Commodore Chris Little’s IC45 “Bounder” enjoyed her first RORC outing crossing the line fourth at 0732. Arriving happy and dry in his new oilskins his lifejacket “misfired” and inflated just before the finishing line, leaving the crew to wonder what he knew that they did not! RORC medallions will be presented on Tuesday 20 May 2003 at 1930 at the Clubhouse, 20 St James’s Place, London SW1. All crews welcome. Full results on the website. List of prize-winners below.
