FRIDAY 8th JULYFrom an entry of 16 yachts, 15 came to the start line (one having withdrawn on the morning of the race due to a shortage of crew) for the 1400 hrs start. On Friday morning the Race Committee issued a Change to the Sailing Instruction and altered the course to be sailed. The forecasted very light winds being the reason for the change of course. This new course was as follows: Course B: Pluckington to Port - Channel Course to Q2 to Starboard - Rowan Rocks East Cardinal to Starboard - Howth Buoy to Starboard -South Rowan Rocks to Starboard - Howth YC Finish Line During the Friday evening and the early hours of Saturday morning the wind virtually disappeared and by 0800 hrs on Saturday morning the Race Officer had received his first couple of retirements. Retirements kept coming in throughout the day and by 2200 hrs on Saturday all but 4 had retired. The first finisher – Ragtime III arrived over the finish line at 0035 hrs on Sunday morning – 34 hours after the start. The next finisher - Panda Nova II - arrived some seven and a half hours later at 0806 and the final finisher arrived at 0918, the fourth yacht having retired at 0815. In all 7 yachts arrived in Howth in time for a beer and a further 3 arrived the following morning. The overwhelming consensus was that everyone had had a tremendous race albeit with only 3 finishers. The welcome at Howth Yacht Club was, as always, fantastic and sincere thanks go to all the team there. My thanks also go the Commodore of Liverpool Yacht Club, John D’Henin, for motoring over to Howth after retiring and also to the Commodore of Royal Dee Yacht Club, Richard Yeoward and his wife Jane for their excellent hospitality aboard ‘Alondra’ and the very kind words he said on Saturday evening. Finally a special thank you to the Race Control team at the start in Liverpool, including Alan Dickinson for all his work in scrutineering the entrants, and especially to Jim Connolly and Derek Sparks for making the arduous journey over to Howth to oversee the finish!
